NILAYA, GOA

Architect:
Built on top of the hill overlooking the wide stretch of beach, Nilaya spreads its arms towards the panoramic view below. It is an earthy structure built from stone excavated from the hill behind and uses a renewable timber (coconut rafters) for its roofing. Incorporated into the building are old artefacts like temple columns and grinding stones. Old methods of construction are also recalled like brick arches, vaults and domes. The central core of the building which houses an informal sitting area, generates four arms from two of which sprout the dining and living and from the other two, four guests rooms each. One envelopes the garden court and the other defines the swimming pool court. The interiors of the room embody strong  cosmic themes of air, fire, stars, moon, earth, and the sun, each theme permitting through the colour schemes, fittings, lamps, windows, and spilling into the tiles and floor. The overall effect is a series of images of east and west and the home can be only experienced by moving through myriad spaces. Conceptually this informal hotel is meant to run like the inn of the old days where the owners virtually shared their day and meals with you. Thus resulting in a hotel of great informality where all the residence can gather in single spaces like the informal dining pavilion or spread themselves in the many private hideaways this house offers. The owners bedroom sits atop the core room of the house and has a 360 degree view of the land, thus enabling them to monitor and offer their personalised service to their guests, all of whom come to experience what the name of their inn has to offer – Nilaya – Place in the Blue – Heaven.
